Ingrid Mulder is an expert in transformative and social design. As an Associate Professor of Design Techniques at Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering and director of the Delft Design Lab Participatory City Making, she takes the city as a learning ecosystem to study the emerging role of design to accelerate sustainability transitions. With a background in policy and organization sciences (MA, University of Tilburg) and educational science and technology (Ph.D., University of Twente), she started her early research career anticipating future technologies impacting society within the National Top Technology Institute on Telematics. As part of her previous readership in digital social innovation, she founded Creating010, a trans-disciplinary design-inclusive research centre addressing societal challenges mainly related to digital transformation.
Michael Rodrigues Delft University of Technology

Michael Rodrigues is a geographer and GIS specialist with over two decades of experience in spatial analysis, cartography, and geoinformation systems. He currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at Delft University of Technology. Michael holds a PhD in Geography from the Complutense University of Madrid, with a thesis on land use and land cover dynamics. Michael’s career is marked by a strong commitment to the development and application of spatial tools to address complex social, environmental, and urban challenges.
María Elena López-Reyes Aalborg University https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5710-7907

María Elena López Reyes is a strategic designer and social researcher specialising in digital transitions and complex service systems. She is currently a PhD fellow at the Human Centred Science and Digital Technologies research group in the Department of Communication and Psychology at Aalborg University in Copenhagen. María is part of the “Towards a Sustainable Open Data Ecosystem” (ODECO) project, which is an EU Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network initiative. Her project aims to maximise the availability and use of local open government data by providing practical guidelines for local governments to develop open data ecosystems that prioritise and maximise social value creation.
Ariele Empirio Delft University of Technology

Ariele Francesca Empirio, a Strategic Designer specializing in Participatory Design and Social Design, earned her MSc in Strategic Product Design from Delft University of Technology's Faculty of Industrial Design. During her academic journey, she actively engaged with the PACES, focusing on the role of narratives surrounding the migration debate in her thesis project. Ariele collaborated with the Delft Design Lab Participatory City Making, lending support to the "Strategic Design for Social Innovation" and "Design & the City" courses. Within these educational and research contexts, she concentrated on exploring the transformative potential of design in the social and political spheres.
Alankrita Sarkar Delft University of Technology

Alankrita Sarkar is a Ph.D. candidate at TU Delft's Department of Architecture, researching on cross-border relations from the lens of landscape and governance. She is also working as a Research Program Coordinator at Deltametropolis Association in the Netherlands since last 6 years and have been leading international/European projects and programs. Her role is to bridge the gap between research and practice, positioning the Netherlands in the European planning and emphasising cross-border development focused on strategic collaboration, transitions and climate urgencies. Her interest lies in understanding the spatial design and planning systems in relation with governance, contributing to the advancement of spatial planning and design in delta territories. She is a strategic spatial planner, with her Masters from TU Delft (2017) and an architect from India (2014).

Abstract

The current work explores value mapping as a pedagogical tool to gain a better understanding of the role of values in addressing sustainability challenges and their implications across scales, disciplines, and time. First, we introduce a Master-level course where students use the city as a learning ecosystem and engage with situated creative practices tackling global sustainability challenges at a local scale. Then we discuss the developed value maps. It can be concluded that the value mapping process not only proved instrumental in offering valuable insights and contextual understanding into the intricate, and sometimes conflicting, values identified, but also fostered students’ critical thinking skills, allowing them to identify potential areas of discord among stakeholders. The collaborative mapping approach, guided by shared values and facilitated by design expertise, holds the potential to overcome challenges, create a thriving ecosystem, and ensure a future where ecological well-being, shared responsibility, and informed decision-making go hand in hand.
